Rockbeare Manor Devon Wedding Photography ~ Karl & Ben

Karl and Ben’s beautiful same-sex wedding at Rockbeare Manor was filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. As a Devon wedding photographer, I love capturing natural, candid moments like these! Like many couples, they waited an extra year due to the pandemic but it was well worth the wait! Karl and Ben weren’t sure what a gay wedding should ‘look like’. They asked me a couple of times during the day if it was alright. The answer is a resounding ‘yes’! It was absolutely perfect and it was so much fun to be there to capture it all.

I met the guys in the morning for some groom prep photos. I captured all the little details as usual. Instead of perfume and tiaras it was bow ties and waistcoats! Karl had six groomsmaids who looked stunning in emerald green dresses. The boys looked cool in their black-tie attire. I think Karl thought he was someone from Downton Abbey as his groomsmaids helped him to get ready (this guy was born to have a valet!).

The ceremony was outside and the two grooms approached from each side of the house to walk down the aisle together. After the legal part of the ceremony, Karl and Ben honoured the Jewish tradition of smashing two glasses. They even broke into an impromptu Jewish dance much to the delight of their guests!

The reception decor was green and white and the cake was a showstopper! I loved the little clay pots that a friend made for the couple – they were so cute! The speeches were both funny and moving as Karl and Ben expressed their joy at finding each other. There was even a ‘Friends’ reference of finding their lobster (if you know, you know). There were a couple of surprises for guests in the evening. Ben sang a humorous take on ‘You’re still the one’ to his new husband and their first dance broke into a flash mob.

Karl and Ben weren’t sure what a gay wedding should ‘look like,’ but the answer is simple ~ it should be a reflection of you as a couple. If you’re planning your own same-sex wedding, check out my LGBT wedding photography page for more inspiration.
