Wedding Photography at Torre Abbey & Spanish Barn
I’ve been photographing weddings at this popular Torquay wedding venue for over 10 years so I’ve put together this post to show you what your wedding photography at Torre Abbey and the Spanish Barn might look like. Did you know Torre Abbey dates back to 1196 and is the oldest building in Torquay? It was once a monastery and later home to a prominent local family. In the grounds, is the Spanish Barn where prisoners from the Spanish Armada were kept! I do like a wedding venue with an interesting history!
Devon Wedding Venue
Torre Abbey offers a variety of spaces to host weddings. From intimate weddings for 20 in the Palm House to large gatherings of 200 in the Spanish Barn, there is something for everyone. The pretty gardens are the perfect spot for your welcome drinks reception.
Ceremony at Torre Abbey & Spanish Barn
The are several options for your civil wedding ceremony. The medieval undercrofts is an intimate space underneath the Abbey. Stone walls and archways create a really unusual setting for up to 70 guests. Alternatively, there is the ballroom inside the main house, also seating 70. The Palm House can hold small weddings and is always full of colour. Finally, the Spanish Barn can be set up for ceremonies for larger weddings of up to 200 guests.
Your Wedding Reception
After the ceremony, guests spill out into the gardens for welcome drinks. As a photographer, I love the well kept flower beds and the stunning Palm House which provide year-round colour. There’s also a room inside the main house just in case of bad weather. The Spanish Barn hosts the wedding breakfast. It can be set up with round or long tables. It’s a blank canvas to create your own wedding. It’s naturally quite dark so I would recommend lots of candles and hired lighting to brighten the space. You can hire your own caterers and bar and the wedding planners at the Abbey will be happy to offer recommendations.
Wedding Photos at Torre Abbey & the Spanish Barn
I’ve captured many weddings here over the years so I’ve come to know the best spots for your couple photos. If you want some photos to show the history of the Abbey then there is a grand staircase and a pretty stone archway. The gardens are the best place for those relaxed, couple shots. Wander through the flower beds and ancient ruins whilst I snap away. The Palm House is a pretty spot too and especially handy if it happens to rain because you can get that outdoor feeling without getting wet.
