Weddings at Bickley Mill ~ A Photographer’s View

A hidden gem ~ Bickley Mill weddings

Bickley Mill is one of my favourite Torbay wedding venues and I’ve been capturing weddings here for over 10 years. Nestled between Torquay and Newton Abbot it’s a real hidden gem! I’ve put together a selection of my Bickley Mill wedding photography to showcase how your big day might look. Inside, the whitewashed stone walls and rustic beams provide a beautiful setting for your wedding meal. This 13th century mill sits in pretty grounds that are perfect for those relaxed couple portraits.

My favourite spots for your couple photos

The first couple portrait of the day will usually be the confetti shot. I would recommend lining your guests up immediately after the ceremony along the path to form a confetti tunnell (your bridesmaids and groomsmen can help with this). The staff can whisk you away for 5 minutes while we get organised and then you can exit the building from upstairs and make your way down the path. As you slowly walk through, I’ll capture the perfect newlywed photo! Nothing says ‘just married’ quite like confetti. The informal grounds are the ideal backdrop and I’ll make you feel at ease while we capture the perfect, relaxed photos. We don’t have to wander too far for your couple photos so you won’t be away from your guests for too long. My favourite spots include the rustic barn and the sloping garden with Bickley Mill itself in the background.

The reception space ~ how to make it your own

I’ve shot different styles of wedding at Bickley Mill so I’ve chosen some inspiration photos to help you plan a look that suites you. The focal point of your wedding will be the Millers Room which hosts the sit down meal. The stone walls and wooden beams offer a blank canvas for you to create your own theme. It really suits vintage, rustic and boho weddings or if you’re looking for something more modern then classic green foliage works too! The twinkly lights around the beams are a permanent fixture and you can add extra lighting with candles. The room changes easily with the seasons. Why not add bright sunflowers for a splash of colour or jars of fairy lights for autumn coziness.

Indoor & outdoor ceremony options

Bickley Mill is one of the prettiest places near Newton Abbot to say ‘I do’. Most of the wedding ceremonies I have captured have been in the Millers Room. There is also a brand new outdoor area for an outdoor ceremony. Whichever you choose, I’ll be there to capture all the laughter and tears and those all important moments. If you’re looking for a wedding photographer for your Newton Abbot wedding, I’d love to hear from you!

Capturing the day at Bickley Mill

After the ceremony, your guests can mingle on the decking over welcome drinks. There is a covered area just in case the British weather doesn’t play ball. In the summer, you can opt for a BBQ for a more relaxed vibe to your day. I’ll be capturing all those candid moments ~ everything from garden games to an alpaca visit! The speeches is always a good opportunity for me to capture more candid photos as guests react to the emotional moments and embarrassing stories! After your meal, the staff will transform the Miller Room into a dance space for the evening. The fairy lights create a romantic atmosphere for your first dance. One of my couples even hired a saxophonist to get the party started!

Things to consider when getting married here

The bridal prep room at Bickley Mill is fairly small so I would recommend nominating a bridesmaid to give it a tidy up every now and then to make the most of your bridal prep photos. If you’d like to bring along some wedding stationery I can add it to a lovely flat lay photo of your flowers and accessories. Another top tip is to consider the time of your couple photos. Bickley Mill is set in a valley and the sun goes down behind the hill earlier than you might expect. I will be keeping an eye on the light so be ready to go for your couple photos when I give you the nod so that we can get some pretty sunlit photos.
